The "City of Pearls"
La Paz (meaning "peace" in Spanish) is the capital of the Mexican state of Southern Baja California. Located on the shore of the beautiful Bay of La Paz in the Sea of Cortez, it is the second largest city on the Baja Peninsula and has a population of about 260,000. La Paz retains the charm a small Mexican colonial town. A number of Baja's most beautiful islands lie just a short distance offshore.
Hernán Cortés visited La Paz in 1535, but no permanent settlement was established until 1811. The city was, for hundreds of years, known for its pearl fishing, and La Paz was often referred to as "The City of Pearls". However, in the middle of the 20th century the oyster beds were destroyed by disease
